Kandyan Period (1590 AD-1815 AD)
Back to all activitiesThe Kandyan Period (1590 AD–1815 AD) was the final era of Sri Lanka’s independent monarchy, centred in Kandy. It was known for preserving Buddhist traditions, traditional arts, architecture, and cultural heritage while resisting Portuguese and Dutch colonial powers. The kingdom eventually fell due to internal power struggles, political conflicts, and British intervention. In 1815, the Kandyan Convention brought the kingdom under British rule, ending Sri Lanka’s traditional monarchy and independent royal governance.
