Kotte Period (1412 AD-1597 AD)
Back to all activitiesThe Kotte Period (1412 AD–1597 AD) was an important era in Sri Lankan history, known for its literary achievements, Buddhist scholarship, trade, and cultural development. The kingdom flourished under rulers such as Parakramabahu VI. Its decline began with Portuguese intervention, internal power struggles, and conflicts over succession. Following the division of the kingdom and the growing influence of Portuguese colonial rule, Kotte gradually lost its independence and was incorporated into Portuguese-controlled territory by the late 16th century.
