The temple has a remarkable history closely associated with the Sri Lankan national hero Henry Pedris (1888–1915). Henry Pedris was a wealthy businessman, philanthropist, and horseman who was wrongly accused of treason during the 1915 riots under British colonial rule. After an unfair military trial, he was executed by firing squad at the young age of 27. Today, he is remembered as a martyr whose sacrifice inspired Sri Lanka's independence movement. In memory of Henry Pedris, his parents made generous contributions to Buddhist religious activities and helped develop Isipathanaramaya Temple, making it both a place of worship and a monument to his legacy.
The temple is also famous for the extraordinary artistic work of Sarlis Master (M.Sarlis), one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated temple artists and craftsmen.
