The remains of this building complex provide an insight into the organized monastic life that existed around the great stupa. The site consists of the remains of several buildings that were used for the residence and daily activities of Buddhist monks, including a residence believed to have been occupied by the chief monk.
The layout of the complex reflects the careful planning and architectural skills of ancient Sri Lankan builders. Even though only the foundations and other archaeological remains survive today, they help us understand how monks lived and carried out their religious activities within the monastery.
The Eastern Monastery Complex is therefore an important part of the historical landscape surrounding Ruwanweli Maha Seya, offering visitors a glimpse into the monastic community that once flourished here.
