According to the Mahavamsa, the site is believed to be the Samuddhagiri Monastery, which was established for Pansukulika monks, who followed a simple and secluded lifestyle dedicated to meditation.

The Samantapasadika also mentions a place called Padhanagharaya, situated to the north of the Maha Vihara. It is believed to have been a temple complex associated with monks who spent their time meditating in the peaceful surroundings of the Maha Vihara.

These references provide an insight into the important role that meditation and secluded monastic living played in the ancient Buddhist community of Anuradhapura.
