The temple is believed to have been established in the late nineteenth century and has gradually developed into an important centre of Buddhist worship. Over the years, generous devotees and resident monks have contributed to the expansion of the temple by constructing new religious buildings and improving its facilities. Today, the temple continues to attract large numbers of devotees from Nugegoda and neighbouring areas who visit to seek blessings and participate in religious activities.

The temple complex includes many traditional features found in Sri Lankan Buddhist temples. These include a beautifully maintained stupa, a sacred Bodhi tree, an image house containing statues of the Buddha, a Dhamma hall for sermons, and residential quarters for monks. The peaceful surroundings, despite being located in a busy urban environment, create an ideal atmosphere for meditation and religious devotion. Visitors often offer flowers, light oil lamps, chant Pirith, and spend time in quiet contemplation.

One of the most sacred parts of Nugegoda Subadraramaya is its beautifully maintained shrine room (Image House). The shrine room houses a magnificent seated Buddha statue that serves as the main object of worship for devotees. The interior is decorated with colourful murals depicting important events from the life of the Buddha, Jataka stories, and significant moments in Buddhist history.

Subadraramaya is widely recognized for its contribution to Buddhist education. The temple conducts Dhamma School classes for children, helping them learn the teachings of the Buddha, Buddhist history, moral values, and traditional customs. Religious programmes, meditation sessions, Dhamma sermons, and workshops are regularly organized for both children and adults. Through these educational activities, the temple helps cultivate discipline, compassion, respect, and mindfulness among members of the community.
