It is believed to have been built during the early 19th century, although some historical accounts associate it with the reign of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. An ambalama is a traditional Sri Lankan shelter built to provide a resting place for travellers, pilgrims, traders, and other people travelling long distances. Before modern transportation and roadside facilities became common, ambalamas played an important role in Sri Lankan society by offering shelter from the sun and rain. Kadugannawa Ambalama is an example of the island’s traditional architecture and cultural heritage, reflecting the hospitality and craftsmanship of earlier generations.

The ambalama is associated with the historic route connecting Colombo and Kandy, which has been an important transportation corridor for centuries. Travellers moving between the coastal regions and the central highlands often needed places to rest during their journeys. Traditional resting shelters such as this one provided a convenient space for people to take a break, share meals, meet fellow travellers, and continue their journeys. These structures were especially valuable when travelling on foot or by traditional means of transport.

The architecture of Kadugannawa Ambalama reflects the simple yet practical design of traditional Sri Lankan buildings. Its structure features traditional architectural characteristics associated with the Kandyan period. Ambalamas were generally constructed using locally available materials such as timber, stone, brick, and clay tiles. Their open or partially open layouts allowed air to circulate freely while providing protection from changing weather conditions. The roof was an essential feature, offering shade and shelter to visitors. Although these buildings were often modest in appearance, their construction demonstrated the skills of traditional craftsmen and an understanding of the local climate and environment.
