The stupa located east of the Thuparamaya Dagoba is traditionally believed to be the relic stupa of Arhath Sanghamitta Theri, built to enshrine her ashes.

Arhath Sanghamitta Theri was the daughter of Emperor Ashoka and the sister of Arhath Mahinda Thero, who brought Buddhism again to Sri Lanka. She arrived in Sri Lanka carrying a southern branch of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree and played a significant role in establishing the Bhikkhuni Shasana (the Buddhist Order of Nuns) on the island. Her contribution was instrumental in the growth and development of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Today, the stupa stands as a symbol of her lasting spiritual legacy and remains an important site of religious and historical significance.
