The waterfall derives its name from its unique shape. The Sinhalese word "Bopath" means "Bo leaf," referring to the sacred leaf of the Bodhi tree. As the water spreads out over the broad rock surface before plunging downward, it resembles the shape of a Bo leaf. This distinctive appearance makes Bopath Ella different from many other waterfalls in Sri Lanka and has contributed to its popularity.
Bopath Ella is formed by the Kuru Ganga, a tributary of the Kalu Ganga, one of Sri Lanka's major rivers. The waterfall has a height of approximately 30 metres (98 feet). Although it is not among the tallest waterfalls in the country, its graceful flow and unique shape make it one of the most picturesque. During the rainy season, the volume of water increases significantly, creating a spectacular display of cascading water. In the dry season, the flow becomes gentler, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding rock formations.
The area around the waterfall is rich in biodiversity. Dense forests surrounding Bopath Ella provide habitat for many species of birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. One popular legend tells of a beautiful young woman who met a tragic fate near the waterfall, giving rise to stories that the area is haunted. Although these stories are based on folklore rather than historical evidence, they have become an important part of the cultural identity of the waterfall and continue to attract curious visitors. Such legends add a sense of mystery to the natural beauty of the site.
Over the years, Bopath Ella has developed into an important tourist attraction. Visitors come to enjoy the scenic beauty, relax in the peaceful surroundings, take photographs, and experience the refreshing atmosphere created by the waterfall. Basic visitor facilities, including parking areas, food stalls, and resting places, have been established to accommodate the growing number of tourists.
