Kaudulla National Park is centred around the ancient Kaudulla Tank (Kaudulla Wewa), which serves as the park's primary water source and supports its rich ecosystem. This historic reservoir was built by King Mahasen during the 3rd century AD and continues to provide water for the park's diverse wildlife.

Kaudulla National Park covers an area of about 6,900 hectares. It is famous for its large population of Asian elephants. Every year, during the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather around the Kaudulla Tank in an event known as "The Gathering." This is one of the largest gatherings of wild elephants in Asia.

The park is also home to many other animals such as deer, wild boars, monkeys, crocodiles, and sloth bears. Many species of birds, including eagles, pelicans, painted storks, and peacocks, can also be seen there. Because of its rich biodiversity, Kaudulla is a popular destination for bird watchers and nature lovers.

Visitors can enjoy exciting jeep safaris while observing animals in their natural habitat. The park plays an important role in protecting endangered species and preserving Sri Lanka's natural heritage.
